Edison Wins Fourteenth Straight...

It took several days and three appeals, but the Firelands Challenge Championship has finally been determined.  The team from Edison High School is champion for the 2025-2026 season.

This marks the fourteenth straight championship for Edison High School.  But it did not reach this pinnacle without a struggle.

When the final Championship Match was held last week, Edison and Norwalk ended the series with a tie in their cumulative scores.  Under the rules, both teams announced that they would file at least one appeal of a question response given during the match.  Port Clinton had no appeals.

A contingency tie-breaker was then conducted pending the outcome of the appeals.  Edison won the tie-breaker, but that result would only determine the champion if the appeals did not resolve the issue.

Norwalk filed an appeal of its response to a question based upon Ray Bradbury’s short story, “The Veldt”.  Norwalk’s response to a question concerning a psychologist’s suggestion about what to do with a children’s nursery was upheld, giving Norwalk an additional four points.

Edison also appealed one of its responses to another question based upon the story.  It’s response about what the children did after the nursery was locked was accepted.  Edison picked up three points and Norwalk lost two points from its bonus attempt on the same question.

Edison had one final appeal for a question coming from the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley.  The question concerned the evidence found with Justine Moritz that led to her being arrested for murder.  Edison’s appeal was accepted for an additional four points while Norwalk lost one point from its bonus attempt.

The net result of the appeals gave Edison an additional seven points for a final match score of 42.   Norwalk picked up one point for a match score of 49.  Norwalk still won the Championship Match, but the championship is determined based upon cumulative scores.

The cumulative scores for the three teams in the Championship Rounds after all appeals are:

  • Edison 143 – First Place
  • Norwalk 137 – Second Place
  • Port Clinton 113 – Third Place

“This was an incredible season,” commented William Muthig, the program’s coordinator.  “It showed increased efforts on the part of all of the teams.  Those efforts resulted in close matches and several ties, including the Championship Series.”
