Twelfth Consecutive Victory

Norwalk’s team made it close, but not close enough to keep Edison from winning its twelfth consecutive Firelands Challenge Championship.  The final championship round was held in front of Edison’s student body and nerves were frayed as Norwalk outscored Edison by five points to win the match.

The Championship is determined by which team scores the most points over the course of all three matches.  After winning the first match by 19 points, Edison relied on consistently high scores over the next two matches to secure the title with a total of 148 points.

Norwalk finished the series in second place with 137 points.  St. Mary Central Catholic finished in third with 80 points.

Norwalk and Edison were tied after the first segment of the match with 14 points each.  St. Mary was close behind with 11 points.

Edison took a one point lead after answering two World History questions.  Norwalk responded by taking a Toss-up question in Music and taking a bonus point from Edison in Mathematics.

The first half of the match ended with a Lightning Round, but most of the questions went unanswered.  For instance, none of the teams knew the name of Abraham Lincoln’s first vice-president (Hannibal Hamlin).

The second half of the match began with questions on U.S. Government.  Norwalk picked up a quick six points while Edison and St. Mary were unable to score.

Edison started to come back by being the only team to answer a Physical Science question about force. Next it answred an American History question about the Compromise of 1850.  Norwalk missed its question in that category.

Edison tacked on another 4 points by answering a Quotations Toss-up question.  Edison was two points behind Norwalk going into the final Lightning Round.

Norwalk capped its scoring in the final Lightning Round by answering four of the eight questions.  Edison could only answer one.

Edison’s students applauded Norwalk’s performance when the match ended, but really erupted with the cumulative scores were announced and Edison was crowned champion.

The results of the three Championship Matches and the cumulative scores are:
