Firelands Challenge Scores Adjusted
Response Appeals Give Edison the Lead...
The competition in the Firelands Challenge Championship series does not stop with the end of each match. Teams are allowed to appeal responses given in a match that were ruled incorrect. Successful appeals have changed the placement of the teams vying for the 2025-2026 championship.
Appealed responses have to lay out a rationale as to why the appeal should be granted. The appeals are then sent out to an Appeals Review Board.
If the board members agree with the argument presented in an appeal, that team can be awarded the points connected with the question that was asked in the match. There were four appeals from each of the first two championship matches.
Two appeals were granted after the first Championship Match, both going in Edison’s favor. The adjusted match scores for that match are: Edison 45, Norwalk 44, and Port Clinton 40.
Two appeals were granted after the second Championship Match. Again, both went in Edison’s favor. The adjusted match scores for the second Championship Match II are: Edison 56, Norwalk 44, and Port Clinton 32.
Cumulative scores going into the final match are Edison 101, Norwalk 88, and Port Clinton 72. The final Championship Match is scheduled for Wednesday at Norwalk High School.
Will a new champion be crowned in the final match? Will there be more appeals that will extend the competition? William Muthig, the program’s coordinator said, “The competition has been fierce all season and I expect it to continue to the very last question.”
