Another Shakeup in Firelands Challenge

Round V Results...

The Firelands Challenge Program wrapped up its fifth round of matches on Tuesday.  When the cumulative scores were tallied, Port Clinton emerged as the number one team with only one round of matches left to go.

Port Clinton defeated teams from Danbury and New London to earn the highest score for the round.  It took the lead in the match after the second category of questions.  It pulled down 15 bonus points by answering questions first posed to the other teams. 

Port Clinton also answered the most Lightning Round questions to finish the match with 64 points.  Danbury came in second with 32 and New London scored 20 points.

Norwalk dropped down into second place and Huron dropped down into fifth place and they competed against each other in their match with Oak Harbor.  Seven points separated the teams from Norwalk and Huron at the end of the match.

Norwalk used a four-point advantage in the Toss-up Categories and a two-point advantage in the Lightning Rounds to finish the match with 52 points.  Huron kept the match close with 45 points and Oak Harbor finished with 25 points.

In another key match-up, Edison moved up in the team standings from fifth to fourth.  Edison is in pursuit of a fourteenth consecutive team championship and this win helps it to secure a spot in the upcoming Play-off Round.

Edison competed with Lakota and Margaretta and led the match from start to finish.  It ended with 61 points, the second highest round score, while Lakota and Margaretta tied with 14 points each.

Other match scores included:

  • Perkins 50, Willard 24, and Sandusky 21
  • St. Paul 44, Monroeville 17, and Bellevue 13
  • St. Mary 55, South Central 29, and Western Reserve 12

The top five schools and their cumulative scores after Round V are:

  1. Port Clinton 278
  2. Norwalk 276
  3. St. Mary 253
  4. Edison 248
  5. Huron 246
