Edison Wins Nail-biter...

...Assumes Lead in Firelands Challenge Championship.

The opening match of the Firelands Challenge Championship Series saw host Huron High School in a close battle with Edison and Willard.  Only three points separated the teams going into the final segment of the match before Edison pulled ahead to win with 52 points.  Huron scored 42 and Willard 33 points.

Willard held an early lead in the match as it was to only team to score in the Vocabulary category.  Edison stayed close and took the lead at the half-way point by outscoring Willard and Huron by four points in the first lightning round.  Willard took the lead back with eleven points in the categories of U.S. Government and Great Books.  However, when Willard missed its Team Choice question and Edison answered its question correctly, the lead went back to Edison.

Going into the final segment of the match the scores were:  Edison 34, Willard 32, and Huron 31.  Edison correctly answered questions in each of the final categories to pull out the 10 point victory.

Huron High School got off to a slow start with only 13 points in the first half of the contest.  It had a better performance in the second half by answering all of its regular category questions and by picking up its Team Choice question in Foreign Language.

Willard had a strong performance in the first three segments of the match.  However, it was only able to earn one point in the fourth segment of the contest

Two finals matches remain and the cumulative scores from each match are added together to determine the eventual Firelands Challenge champion.  Edison currently is on a streak of seven straight championship victories.

The next match will be hosted by Willard at 9 a.m. on Friday, January 31.  Edison will host the final match on February 5.
