Edison Extends Lead in Firelands Challenge..

Round II Matches Conclude...

The Firelands Challenge team from Edison High School extended its lead in the academic completion on Wednesday.  Its edge after the first round was 11 points over St. Paul, the second-place team.  With Round II matches completed, Edison’s lead is now 30 points over St. Mary CC, the new second-place team.

Edison answered all of the Current Events questions in its match with Western Reserve and Oak Harbor and never looked back.  Team members correctly answered nine out of 10 regular team questions on their way to victory.   Edison scored 37 points in both halves of the match to finish with 74.

The team from St. Paul dropped out of the top five teams as it struggled in its match with Norwalk and Danbury.  St. Paul tied Norwalk with 27 points, but Danbury won the match with 35 points.

St. Mary CC moved up one place to second in the overall standings.  It faced teams from Huron and South Central.  It led South Central by 3 points at the half-way point and then scored 27 points in the second half to finish with 57.

South Central, although finishing with 35 points in the match, has enough cumulative points to be in fifth place.  Huron dropped out of the top five teams by scoring only 26 points.

Willard used a 54 point performance to move from fifth-place to third-place in the standings.  It had an easy match against Sandusky and Monroeville that are tied with 30 cumulative points after the first two rounds.

Margaretta has taken over fourth-place in the standings by winning its match over Perkins and New London.  It capitalized on its opportunities by answering both Toss-up Questions and two Team Choice questions to end the match with 47 points.

After two rounds of competition, the top five teams and their cumulative scores are:

  • Edison                   132
  • St. Mary               102
  • Willard                  95
  • Margaretta           81
  • South Central       75

Perkins and St. Paul just missed the cut.  They are tied with 74 points apiece.

Matches resume for Round III on November 6 and 7.  The matches are conducted at EHOVE Career Center.
