Edison Secures Ninth Straight Championship

Firelands Challenge Season 40 Results

Edison stretched its unprecedented victory streak on Thursday by winning the Firelands Challenge Championship for the ninth straight season.  Bellevue finished in second place and St. Paul closed out the season in third place.

There are three championship matches and Edison won all three.  The cumulative points earned in these matches determine which team wins the championship.

The final match opened with Edison unable to answer its Current Events question.  However, Edison scored six points in the next category, American Literature, and never gave up the lead for the remainder of the match.  It won the match with 61 points

St. Paul and Bellevue battled each other in the final match.  Only one point separated the two teams when the match ended.  St. Paul had 27 points and Bellevue 26 points.

As it did in the first Championship Match, Edison relied on bonus points to pad its lead.  It scored 13 bonus points in seven different question categories.

Edison won all three of its regular season matches as well as winning all three Championship Matches.  St. Paul finished the regular season in second place.  Bellevue won the Play-off Round to be included in the Championship series.

The season was shortened this year due to the pandemic.  Teams had to adjust to new match protocols including having only two team members participating at a time and having those team members be at opposite ends of the match table.  Milestone Event Center in Norwalk hosted all of the matches as they had to be at a neutral site.

Edison had a score correction from the second Championship Match following an appeal of its answer to a Physical Science question.  The results of the three matches (with the corrected score) are:

Match I                 Match II               Match III              Cumulative

Edison                                      52                           58                           61                            171

Bellevue                                 37                           38                           26                             101

St. Paul                                    15                           23                           27                               65
