Firelands Challenge Competition to Resume...

Forty-third Season for the Program

Firelands Challenge matches are scheduled to resume next week as the program begins its forty-third season.  Eighteen teams from across north central Ohio are returning to compete for prize money and scholarships.

The season will have six rounds of matches.  The top two teams, based on cumulative scores, will proceed to the championship rounds.  The third-, fourth-, and fifth-place teams will participate in a play-off round with the winner joining the top two teams for the championship rounds.

Last season was very competitive with a three-way tie in one match and a sudden-death finish in the Play-off Round.  “This year looks to be just as competitive,” said William Muthig, the program coordinator.  “In the pre-season practice matches, the top five team scores were within five-points of each other.”

The big question going into this season is will Edison High School continue its championship streak.  Last year marked the eleventh-straight victory for the school.  Edison has five returning team members from last year’s team.

Danbury High School, last year’s second place team, has four returning team members.  Perkins High School finished in third place last year and has five veterans returning.

All of the regular season matches will be held at the EHOVE Career Center.  The first round schedule has six matches.

Buckeye Broadband is a major sponsor and will videotape some of the matches for later viewing.  Other major sponsors include:  New Horizons Baking Company of Norwalk, Norwalk Wastewater Equipment Co., Inc., and R & D Equipment, Inc. of Norwalk.  Returning and new sponsors will be recognized at matches throughout the season.
