Professional Development: On-Line Courses

Center Partners with Marygrove/Teachscape to Offer Graduate Courses

North Point Educational Service Center, Marygrove College and Teachscape have formed a partnership that will allow area educators to complete online graduate level courses and even earn a master’s degree. Bill Lally, Superintendent of North Point Educational Service Center, stated, “We were very pleased when Marygrove College and Teachscape approached us with this opportunity. We believe that the program offered by the two organizations will benefit educators in our region. The coursework they offer is flexible, convenient, affordable, engaging and relevant.”

Marygrove College is a private liberal arts college located in Detroit, Michigan. The school’s Education Department has been an important part of the College for eighty (80) years and was recently identified by US News and World Report as one of the nation’s best institutions for preparing teachers. Teachscape is a private enterprise that has been in the business of providing professional development services to schools, districts and state departments of education for over ten (10) years. Teachscape prides itself on, and has developed a reputation for delivering world-class learning options that link theory to practice and support career growth.

Through this partnership, area educators have the opportunity to take content specific courses. The online continuing education offerings are formatted into three (3) semester hour courses. The courses are self-paced and designed to allow participants to problem-solve and collaborate with others. Marygrove’s course catalog provides a variety of options including: Instructional Design, Teacher as Leader, Understanding Teaching and Learning, Research-Based Instructional Strategies, and Effective Assessment. Bill Lally noted, “Three (3) semester hour courses are priced at $450 per offering, which includes tuition and course materials. However, our partnership agreement specifies that area educators receive a $100 discount off each continuing education course. In other words, a three (3) semester hour course will only cost participants $350. That’s a good deal!”

Marygrove College also offers four (4) online Master in the Art of Teaching (MAT) Degree programs. Participants work through coursework developed by Marygrove College faculty in collaboration with Teachscape contributors (including faculty from Dartmouth, Stanford, Michigan State, Florida Rutgers and Kent State). Educators have four (4) degree programs to choose from: Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment (K~12), Elementary Reading & Literacy (K~6), Elementary Mathematics (K~5), and Middle Level Mathematics (6~8). Marygrove College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association (HLC-NCA) and is also approved by the Michigan State Department of Education.
